If you’re new to the plant world and ready to jump into plant parenthood we have the perfect plant for you! It’s the Golden Pothos! The pothos plant also known as Epipremnum aureum originates from Asia. In their natural tropical environment they grow very, very large; they can cover the landscape and climb up trees with their aerial roots.

The pothos plant is also referred to as Devil’s Ivy, we like to think that name comes from the fact that even in the depths of hell, this little beauty would be sitting on the devil’s desk living her best life.
Really though you can’t go wrong if you pick this plant. It’s the perfect low maintenance plant that will add an instant tropical vibe to your interior space. With little care and little cost (usually around only $5 for a 4 inch pot) you can’t go wrong investing in this beauty. As you watch it grow and thrive it will give you the confidence you need to continue on your plant journey.
Golden pothos can tolerate many different living conditions which makes them perfect for the newbie plant parent. While she’s super easy to care for she also has stunning green and gold leaves that are sure to impress.
Light:
Pothos plants like bright indirect light but can thrive in low light settings as well. The only light it will not do good with is bright direct light. If the light is too bright the leaves will start to go pale and in low light conditions the leaves can lose some of their gold variation and retreat to an all green leaf.
Water:
One of the most common mistakes we see with new plant parents is overwatering. Invest in the moisture meter that we use so you’ll gain a better perspective about when it’s time to water your houseplants.
Pothos like to dry out almost completely between each watering. Then when you do water make sure to water thoroughly. How often you water is going to depend on the specific conditions of your space but it’s definitely going to be once a week or less. If the leaves start to wilt time for a drink. If the leaves are turning yellow they are drowning!
Humidity:
Pothos are tropical plants that will love humidity but will flourish in any normal household humidity. Add a humidifier to your space to keep all your tropical plants extra happy.
Soil:
Pothos will grow happily in any normal well draining soil.
Fertilizer:
Fertilizer isn’t necessary to have a happy, thriving pothos but if desired you can give it a houseplant fertilizer monthly.
Toxicity:
This plant is toxic if ingested in large amounts so be mindful of that with pets and children.
The Many Versions of Pothos:
Another wonderful aspect of this plant is the many different looks you can achieve with the same plant.
- You can keep it bushier by taking those trailing stems and wrapping them back in the pot. They will readily shoot out new roots and form a thicker plant. You can also use clean shears to chop off the trailing vines and stick them back in the soil to add bushiness.
- You can hang her up in the air and her gorgeous leaves will come trailing down. Mature it reaches up to 10 feet long or possibly longer!
- Another option is to get yourself a moss pole and watch her climb her way up just like she would do in the wild. You could even add a couple clear hooks to your wall and have a gorgeous piece of living art.

When I had a fish aquarium with tropical fish, I would let my pothos plant grow its roots in the water and it helped filter my aquarium with the added benefit of the natural fertilizer made it grow super fast.
